Story

Suta is because our weavers are. They’re an integral part of our success story and continue to delight and enchant us every day with their invaluable skills.

Growing up in different parts of India, Su and Ta were introduced to handlooms at an early age. When they quit their corporate careers to explore their passions, they realised the urgent need to bridge the gap between lovers of artisanal crafts with the makers of these products. This marked the beginning of their journey to establish a brand whose story begins and ends with the weaver and the loom. From the very start, the weavers were more than vendors. They were family, inviting Su and Ta into their homes and spending time with them.

Since then, Su and Ta have travelled through several villages in Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Varanasi, Odisha and West Bengal, to better understand the crafts that our nation has birthed and to bring artisans specialising in these crafts on board. Suta has since set sail with a guiding compass of uplifting artisans and incorporating our nation’s age-old weaves into stunning and contemporary products. Ensuring the wellbeing of our artisans is our top priority, whether securing them regular employment to ensure the longevity of their trade, or bulk purchasing all their leftover stock during the turbulent pandemic days. From a single weaver in 2006, we’ve come a long way with our current community of more than 17,000 artisans.

We’ve also consciously tried to employ women artisans (nearly 60% of our weavers are women) and offer them a safe work environment to explore their skills. In doing so, we are proud to have offered them a means to become financially independent. Listening to their success stories and personal achievements fills us with great pride. We’re so honoured and humbled to be a part of their journey.

This handloom cotton with kantha embroidery pays homage to the building blocks of Suta and the source of this nation’s rich textile heritage, our weavers.
