Story

Dadi called her Ruku — a shortened version of her good name, Rukmini. She loved her name even though she had little context to it. The name had rhythm and she liked how it warmed up to her ears. But she would often get upset over Dadi looking for ‘Ruku’ throughout the day. Age had made her obsessive. She needed Ruku all the time. Needed her to sit near her head and listen to stories about kings, forts and thrilling war tactics. Ruku had to stroke Dadi’s head and babble as a daily ritual. This part was endearing. The little one could feel her sweaty palms communicate with the greys and wrinkles. Smeared with coconut oil, she preserved small anecdotes in the waves of her hair. Ruku wanted to learn about these tales. And while she tried hard to make friends with their main characters, Dadi basked in care. She believed her five-year-old grandchild could relieve her of the misery of old age. Dadi could nearly see a revived, safer world in her tiny palms.
