Story
Once again, my son had forgotten to tell me about the science project that was due in only a few hours. It was late at night and all the shops were closed – there was no way we could purchase our art supplies. I spent a few moments pondering and then pulled out my arsenal of everyday materials – aluminium foil, cling film, a black marker pen and Styrofoam packaging from tea set we had recently been gifted. My son and I then worked with these simple materials to make our own solar cooker. And, by midnight, we found success.
I should point out that I am not only his mother but also his science teacher at school. I knew he had forgotten about the science project. But, as a working woman and mother, I wanted my son to learn a lesson. He should know that while as a mother, I am always there to support and guide him, he must also learn the importance of independence. That day, he learned not only to be more careful about his responsibilities, but to also manage a crisis with the resources at hand.
