It had been four long months but Piko still didn’t know how to manoeuvre his trunk. The elders assured him that he would grow into his trunk, but it was taking far too long and Piko was growing impatient. One day, the leader of the herd called him over. The leader explained to young Piko that his trunk was a miraculous thing – it had more than 50,000 individual muscle units. It was easy to lose patience when Piko inadvertently stepped on his trunk or swung it around trying to get it to do its bidding, but the day would come when Piko would master his trunk. And Piko understood. His boyhood days wouldn’t last forever, and although he felt silly waving his trunk about, it was also a lot of fun. So, Piko decided to enjoy these days while they lasted.
